Which Water Filtering Systems Dominate The Market Today?
Water filtering systems have become a necessity today. With industrial waste being dumped into rivers and lakes, pesticides seeping into the soil and contaminating ground water, chlorine being added as an disinfectant stored water - the condition of the water continues to worsen every day.
If this aqua is consumed along with so many pollutants present in it - no points for guessing -it leads to numerous health ailments. And this is the precise reason why we all need to depend on water filtering systems.
There are 3 main types of water filtering systems which are dominating the market. Let me share some information on each one of them.
1. Reverse Osmosis based systems
These systems employ a thin semi permeable porous membrane through which aqua is forced under pressure to pass. This membrane acts as a fine sieve - allows the h2o molecules to pass through but blocks the larger contaminants and hence separates them.
- The water is fairly free from all types of contaminants except chlorine and prescription drugs which being smaller in size, pass along and continue to contaminate it.
- The minerals present in the natural water, being larger in size, are removed from it. Such de-mineralized aqua can lead to mineral deficiencies in our body.
2. Distillers
These systems employ two containers - one containing the contaminated water which is boiled to an extent that water converts into vapors, travels through a connecting pipe and starts settling into the second container. The heavier contaminants, since they cannot vaporize, are left behind in the first container and hence removed from water.
- The water is fairly free from all types of contaminants except chlorine which too gets vaporized and passes along with water finally settling into the second container having "pure" water.
- The minerals present in the natural aqua, being heavier and non-vaporizable, are removed from it. Such de-mineralized water can lead to mineral deficiencies in our body.
3. Multi stage water purifiers
These systems employ more than one stages of filtration wherein the cutting edge techniques like carbon filtration, sub micron filtration and ion exchange are used. Water is first passed through a carbon filter which takes removes all heavy contaminants from water. During the second filtration stage, the other contaminants like chlorine, pesticides and microbes are removed from the water. The harmful ions like that of lead and copper are exchanged with that of useful ones like sodium and potassium and are thus removed from water.
- The water is 99% free from all types of contaminants including chlorine and prescription drugs.
- The mineral content of the water is retained as it is.

Gold metal will not dissolbe in either concentrated nictric acid or conentrated hydrochloric acid. It will dissolve, however in aqua regid, a mixture of the two concentrated acids. The products of the reaction are AuCl4- ion and gaseous NO. Write a balanced equation for the dissolution of gold in aqua regia.
"Aqua regia can dissolve gold because each of its two component acids carries out a different function. The nitric acid is a good oxidizing agent. Chloride ions from the hydrochloric acid from coordination complexes with the gold ions, removing them from solution. Reducing the concentration of the Au3+ ions shifts the equilibrium towards the oxidized form."
Au(s) + 3NO3-(aq) + 6H+(aq) <--> Au3+(aq) + 3NO2(g) + 3H2O(l)
Au3+(aq) + 4Cl-(aq) <--> AuCl4-(aq)
Notice that gold ions are produced, thus revealing that gold can be dissolved... what a shame.
